How to set up a Ledger for multisig

In this section, we'll walk through initializing your hardware wallet, setting up basic security features, and securely backing up your seed phrases. Proper initialization ensures your device is ready for secure key management as part of your Unchained vault.

Already set up?

If you have an existing singlesig wallet that was previously set up with its seed phrase properly documented, review the below steps, check all the necessary boxes, and proceed to the next section.

Open the box and familiarize yourself

Open the box to your Ledger and familiarize yourself with its contents. In the box, you’ll find:

The device itself
USB cable
Seed phrase booklet(s)

Download Ledger Live

Download Ledger Live to get started with your Ledger device. Head over to Ledger’s website and follow the download instructions. Once downloaded, open the file to install the program.

Only download Ledger Live from Ledger’s website

You should only download Ledger Live from the official website. There are many fake versions, so do not download it from a third-party app store. If anything looks suspicious, call Unchained at +1 (844) 486-2424.

Connect your device and begin setup

Connect your Ledger to your computer.

You don’t need the Ledger Live program until the end

It’s best to leave Ledger Live closed until a later step to avoid confusion. Setting up your Ledger device will be primarily done on the device screen itself.

After the Ledger receives power, a welcome screen is shown.

Use the right button on your Ledger to scroll through the screens until you see Set up as new device. Press both buttons on your Ledger at the same time to select this option.

Set a PIN

Press both buttons to move forward to your PIN selection.

Use the left and right buttons to cycle through the numbers, and both buttons at the same time to make a number selection.

Once your desired PIN is fully entered, cycle through the number options to find the check mark symbol, and select it.

Next, you will be prompted to confirm your PIN by entering it again.

Back up your seed phrase

Your seed phrase words should never be shared with anyone or stored digitally. In this section, you’ll write them down for maximum security.

Things you’ll need for this section

Your Recovery Seed card
A pen or pencil
A private setting in which to perform these steps

Your Ledger will display Write down your recovery phrase. Press both buttons to proceed.

Press the right button to scroll through all of the messages about seed phrase security. Press both buttons to continue.

Write down the first word of your seed phrase backup in the first numbered space of your wallet backup card.

The order and spelling matter most

The order and spelling of the words matter, but capitalization does not. It’s possible to receive the same word more than once. If your booklet has space for 20 words while your device only provides 12 words, that’s fine (leave 13-20 blank).

Proceed using the right button on your Ledger device. Take your time carefully writing each word in its corresponding numbered space.

Press left to verify words, and perform the multiple choice quiz, depending on your device model. Press the right or left button to scroll through the options, and press both buttons to choose the correct answer based on what you wrote down.

Ledger will display Recovery phrase is set. Press the right button until you see Press both buttons to continue, then press both buttons.

Press the right button until you see Go to the dashboard, then press both buttons.

Open Ledger Live and install bitcoin app

Open the Ledger Live program on your computer. When your Ledger is detected by Ledger Live, select your Ledger device model.

Next, look for the option that says Already have a recovery phrase?. Connect your Ledger and select it.

There may be a brief genuine check. Follow the instructions on Ledger Live.

If you see a screen promoting a service called Ledger Recover, we do not recommend using it. Dismiss it by clicking the X symbol.

Once you’re in the main dashboard of Ledger Live, scroll down to the bottom of the menu on the left. Choose My Ledger.

In the app catalog toward the bottom, bitcoin is listed at forefront. Select Install for the bitcoin app. Once it’s finished installing, Ledger setup is complete and your device is ready to be used to build an Unchained vault.
